  • What Is the Difference Between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (completed medical school and residency) with special training in psychiatry. A psychiatrist can conduct psychotherapy and prescribe medications and other medical treatments. A psychologist usually has an advanced degree, most commonly in clinical psychology, and has extensive research or clinical practice training. Psychologists treat mental disorders with psychotherapy, and some specialize in psychological testing and evaluation.
  • Are Manor Clinic psychiatrists’ visits free of charge?
Yes, psychiatrist visits are covered with your Alberta Health Card if you are an Alberta resident.
  • Do Manor Clinic psychiatrists provide continuity of care?
Manor Clinic psychiatrists work closely with your family physician. They generally see individuals for a one-time consultation and make detailed recommendations to your family physician about the management of your mental health difficulties. Manor clinic psychiatrists are available for a phone consult with your family physician if needed after the one-time consultation. For individuals receiving support from other professionals (like mental health therapists) at the Manor clinic, the professionals regularly consult with the Manor clinic psychiatrists to bring a multidisciplinary approach to support you with your mental health concerns.
  • Are Manor Clinic psychologists’ and counsellors’ visits free of charge?
Unfortunately, psychologists’ and counsellors’ visits are private pay. However, we can provide receipts for insurance purposes if your insurance covers the services. Keep in mind that Manor Clinic psychiatry services are still available to you free of charge if you need mental health support and are unable to afford psychologists or counsellor consults.
  • Does my insurance plan cover counseling/psychotherapy?
Alberta Health Care does not cover private counselling, but it is covered by most extended health care plans (like Blue Cross, Sunlife, and Great West, for example). These private, extended health care plans are often provided as a benefit through your employer. These plans provide coverage for the services of a Registered Psychologist (also referred to as a “chartered” or “licensed” psychologist). Your plan might also list this as coverage for “counselling,” “psychology,” or “psychotherapy.”

Individuals who cannot attend that appointment in person can receive the service online from the comfort of your home. All you need is a computer and an internet connection. Don't have internet and/or a computer? No problem, our clinicians can offer their consults over the phone as well.
