What is Psychosis?

Psychosis is a mental health condition characterized by an impaired relationship with reality, often manifesting as hallucinations and delusions. Individuals experiencing psychosis may struggle to distinguish between what is real and what is not, leading to significant disruptions in their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This condition can occur as a symptom of various mental health disorders, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, and severe depression, or it may arise from substance abuse, trauma, or medical conditions. Symptoms of psychosis can vary in severity and may include disorganized thinking, difficulty concentrating, and changes in mood. The experience of psychosis can be distressing, not only for the individual but also for their families and loved ones. Early intervention is crucial, and treatment often involves a combination of antipsychotic medications, psychotherapy, and support services to help individuals manage their symptoms, regain stability, and improve their overall functioning and quality of life.
